8 Limbs is partnering with City Arts magazine for the next year to profile local artists who practice yoga at 8 Limbs. For the March music issue we highlight Darek Mazzone, a local producer and KEXP DJ who has practiced at 8 Limbs for the last seven years. The DJ for several of our anniversary parties and special yoga classes (Olympic Sculpture Park, Seattle Art Museum), Darek’s focus is on expanding Seattle’s exposure to world music, most notably through his Tuesday night KEXP show Wo Pop. He talked with 8 Limbs about how yoga practice helps him to balance his busy schedule as an artist, producer and father of two. Learn more about Darek on the KEXP website.

What brought you to yoga?
I lead a pretty hectic lifestyle and need a regular exercise program to balance things out. I studied Martial Arts for many years and put my body through some damage. I found Yoga to be healing, centering and strenghtening at the sametime. now i’m hooked.

How long have you practiced yoga?
7 years.

How does yoga support your art?
It’s essential. I’m travelling a lot and often playing in a club into the wee hours of the morning. Practicing Yoga gives me a sense of place wherever I am. The various asanas tied to breathing have gotten me through some insane times.

Why practice at 8 Limbs?
I have tried a lot of different schools and found 8 Limbs to be a great balance of thoughtful teaching and real rock star instructors who I’m amazed by weekly. They have real personalities and enjoy teaching and seeing you improve. The locations are perfect for anyone in the city so I can take a class wherever I may be. The classes are scheduled well for people who don’t work regular hours. The studios are lovely and the music is well thought out for the classes (this is vital for me – if the music is lame I can’t really focus on the class!) I honestly believe 8 limbs is one of the top studios in the US.
