Ah Yoga. So many of us are leaning into its support at this very uncertain time. It is a physical practice that can be a lifeline, and it has philosophical underpinnings that can guide us into the unknown. As we continue our monthly journey through the Yamas and Niyamas, April brings us to santosha, the second Niyama (visit the 8 Limbs Blog starting in September to read about the 5 Yamas and the 1st Niyama).

Santosha is most often translated as contentment. How very appropriate! Our world has just been drastically altered. And so many of our ways of finding satisfaction have been thwarted. I myself have been acutely aware of the fleeting delights in each day that I can still enjoy – my little cup of part coffee, part Dandy Blend; a walk in the Arboretum; a sniff of our daphne bush. It’s a game we play, as humans, trying to feel good, to find enjoyment through tiny pleasures. Alas, even when we find them, they never last.

Seeking enjoyment isn’t wrong, but in the yogic tradition, true and lasting happiness can only come from practicing complete acceptance of things as they are, rather than as we want or wish them to be. THIS is contentment. AND it doesn’t mean we like what’s happening, or aren’t committed to social change or helping others more deeply impacted. Contentment can abide with action.

This weekend, as you continue to find this new normal, how much deeper can you go into acceptance of this situation, JUST AS IT IS? How much would your anxiety calm if there was nothing to change, and nowhere else to be?

I would love to see you face-to-face and will host a free Community Gathering on this Monday, April 6, from 5:15 til we’re done, after my 4-5pm Gentle class. We’ll start with a short guided breath practice, then have a chance to check-in and “see” one another. Let’s come together! Click here to join anytime after 5pm.

Warmly, Anne Phyfe Palmer, 8 Limbs Founder & Director of Education

P.S. My Livestream tip of the week: invite a friend or family member to Livestream a class with you, then “pin video” of one another! I’ve done a few classes “with” my sister in New Orleans and it’s warming my heart.
