This morning I attended the final class of this year’s Summer Intensive Teacher Training. One of my most favorite honors as Studio Director of 8 Limbs is as witness to the power of yogic teachings, when shared and studied with earnestness and integrity. The enthusiasm, tapasin Sanskrit, is energizing and contagious! The second limb of yoga, niyama, addresses the ways in which we interact with ourselves, and tapas is the third niyama. It is also defined as discipline, or passion, and is an essential piece of a yogic path.

All sixteen sweet souls in the training exemplified tapas; they showed up every weekday from June 26-July 31 to learn about yoga, themselves (self-study is svadhyaya, the fourth niyama), and teaching. They learned about the 8 limbs of yoga – yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and samadhi. They studied anatomy and physiology, physical postures, the Yoga Sutra, chakras, Sanskrit, and mythology. And at the end of five weeks, they worked together to teach one round robin class, five minutes each. What I saw, in that class, was the result of so many people, so many teachers, so many moments, perhaps even millennia. I could see the impressions of each of their instructors, the gifts they passed on, as well as the individual’s own personal strength and personality. It all came together and it looked like brilliance.

That’s all I can really think about today, the power of learning, and teaching, and the honor of witnessing yoga in action. What are you learning right now? What are you teaching? What lights you up with passion, and enthusiasm, and makes you willing to bring great discipline into your life?
