Engaging with the breath has been known for centuries by various wisdom traditions to promote concentration, energetic balance, insight, self-study, and altered states. Establishing a foundation in basic breathing techniques provides a valuable resource for our respiratory, cardiovascular and nervous systems. This is especially true for citizens of the 21st century. During periods of heightened stress, breath practices, called pranayama in Sanskrit, can lower heart rates, boost energy, and shift the stress response of the autonomic nervous system.

This series will focus on breathing techniques that support self-management during these challenging times. Participants will gain an understanding of how posture, physiology, polyvagal theory, and traditional yogic breathing techniques affect our systems and can be used to develop pranayama as a tool for well-being. Additionally, pranayama has the power to orient our awareness toward a more relaxed state of mind. It is one of the most important tools in the yogic system.

Class recordings will be available through June 30, 2021 for those who miss a session.
