Almost a year ago we held one of our 8 Limbs Teacher Meetings. I asked our teachers “what makes 8 Limbs special? Why do people choose 8 Limbs?” In a city FULL of terrific yoga, it’s important for us to know what makes 8 Limbs stand out, what makes us worth the walk/drive/bike/bus, and why people would choose to practice with us.

There were as many reasons as there were people. And that’s the foundation of our mission:

“We recognize that each individual is unique and has a different approach to life. Thankfully there are many ways to practice yoga. At 8 Limbs we embrace diversity over dogma.”

The power of that meeting lingered. This fall we decided this fall to take all of the teacher’s comments and choose 8 (for obvious reasons) to shout out to the world. We have a great thing going on in our neighborhood studios, and we want to make sure everyone knows it!

Every month I’ll blog about one of the 8 Reasons, to tell you more about why we chose it and the story behind the reason. Read about Reason 1. Read about Reason 2. Read about Reason 3.

Reason 4: Locally owned since 1996

Though I am not a native, I moved to Seattle in 1993 from New Orleans, LA, via my college town, Burlington, VT. Though intended as a short stay to explore life in another region and figure out what I wanted to do in life, I fell hard for Seattle and haven’t left! Since then I have lived in Ballard, Phinney Ridge, Ravenna, Capitol Hill, and now live in Madison Valley, where I have owned a home with my husband for almost 13 years. I believe in the power of local living, of spending my time and money in the neighborhoods immediate to my home. This small owner bikes whenever possible, encourages teachers who to teach close to their homes, and makes every effort to support local small business.

Seattle has a young and creative spirit that encouraged and nurtures small, locally-owned business. Patronizing those organizations means that your dollars are going 100% back into the local economy. Your choice to practice at 8 Limbs helps us to employ fourteen admin staff and about forty yoga teachers. It helps us to offer discount and benefits to our staff, including health insurance for those working at least 24 hours a week. It allows me to support my family of two girls who take the bus to their public schools and walk to the local patisserie down the street.

Practice at 8 Limbs and own your own local business? Post it on our Facebook page and tell your fellow 8 Limbs practitioners how they can support you too!
