We’re going to try this again, because we really want to hear from you all! In addition to our monthly Teacher Profiles, 8 Limbs would like to publish monthly Student Profiles. This is where you, our community, can share about your practice and experience with yoga and life. Want to be profiled? See this blog post! We want to hear from you! Our October Student Profile is of Cynthia Barrientos:
Name: Cynthia Barrientos
Neighborhood: West Seattle
8 Limbs Studio(s) you attend: West Seattle
Practicing Since: Since 1971, in West Seattle since 2011
Hobbies/interests: Being with family which now includes our grandson; living an Ayurvedic lifestyle with daily meditation, yoga, “vata-pacifying” diet and daily lifestyle practices; living part time in Meherabad, India.
Favorite yoga practice/pose and why: Tree Pose is where I feel most at home. There is a centering I experience while finding that just-right balance as I breathe into one part of my body at a time with one foot on the ground. Favorite place to practice is on my stone floor in India at 5:30 in the morning. Surrounded by 80 degrees of warm, dawn air, I gaze out into the garden and lean gently to the right and left, mirroring the curve of the palm tree’s fronds.
Movie/book that changed your life: A Hidden Wholeness: The Journey Toward an Undivided Life by Parker Palmer
One secret that helps you to stay healthy is: Keep it simple and “Don’t Worry. Be Happy.” ~Meher Baba
Currently inspired by: Dr. Jayarajan Kodikannath, Academy Director of Kerala Ayurveda Academy where I am studying to be an Ayurvedic Wellness Counselor and Practitioner.
Anything you want to share with our community? In my lifelong yoga practice, after the experience with my first yoga teacher, I’ve spent years looking for another with whom I could feel as comfortably aligned. In 2010, I met an Australian woman in India who I thought was the one. One morning, as I sat with tears flowing down my cheeks and shared with her that she was “the one”, she responded with a gentle and compassionate smile. “I live in India. You live in Seattle. Your yoga teacher is right around the corner. You just have to look.” The following spring, I appeared at the West Seattle 8 Limbs studio for a class. Any class. One of those days when I just needed a yoga class. That was the day I met Tracy Hodgeman, my yoga teacher! By the way, this studio is within walking distance from my home and “just around the corner.”
