Dharana is the sixth limb in the eight-limbed yoga system of Hatha Yoga. Dharana, which means to fix or hold one’s mind, is a deep exploration in the power of concentration. Yogis have long known that focusing our attention fully on one subject expands our human potential.

This type of steady mental focus is becoming more and more difficult in our culture. We are constantly multitasking and shifting our attention rapidly from one subject to another. Lack of concentration affects work, relationships, school, and almost every aspect of our lives. It has been linked to anxiety and depression and is exacerbated by stress. Learning to concentrate deeply is important to our mental health. As we age the mind has a ‘use it or lose it’ tendency; keeping the pistons of mental focus firing is vital. Most importantly, the practice of Dharana teaches us to engage with the world rather than withdraw from it.

Each class of this series will offer information, practices, and opportunities for personal reflection. We will engage with gentle movement, breathing techniques, and meditation to strengthen our ability to concentrate. Participants will explore what causes them to lose focus and create attainable goals to overcome those obstacles. We will also look to neuroscience to learn about what is happening physiologically when we have strong or weak concentration.

Our Deepening Series serve as a space for devoted students of the 8 Limbs community to take their practices further. These series will focus on helping students to deepen their practice and gain further experience with various asana, pranayama, and subtler energetic components of yoga, as well as how to apply these in a personal practice.

Classes will emphasize building a heightened awareness of the body on multiple levels, and then use that awareness to access deeper work of yoga. Some of the series may also cover how to integrate more advanced concepts of yoga philosophy into a physical practice. It is recommended that students have practiced yoga at least one year prior to taking these series.
