At the beginning of 2013, our Winter Schedule just begun, I sat in my bi-monthly meeting with Ashley Dahl, the Executive Director of 8 Limbs, complaining about the workload of my position as Education Director. Fully cemented in my position that it was all too much – the programming, plus our Teacher Trainings, my own teaching, and yoga practice, not to mention parenting, partnering, and householding – I wanted to drop it, the work I’ve done at 8 Limbs for seventeen years (yes, this October is our 17th birthday!), and scale back to just being the owner of 8 Limbs. Someone else could become Education Director, and I could retire (ha).2013-08-16 18.45.50

I’d had it. And Ashley had experienced it many times before, “it” being the wall I hit when I am tired, or overextended, the wall that keeps me, and many of us, from seeing beyond the current situation, and from seeing possible solutions. I want to give up just when I could make a quantum shift that would propel me to the next level of proficiency.

“Why don’t you start the schedule in February next year so you don’t have to make the changeover during the holidays?”

What? At first I resisted. No way! People like to start new things in the New Year! It’s been like this for ages! It’s the way we do it!

But quickly I saw the logic, and the brilliance, and by the end of that meeting we had changed the start date for the Fall Schedule as well. Now, to avoid work stacking up (for me and others at 8 Limbs) during the Christmas/New Years holidays and the brilliance of August in Seattle, our schedules will now publish in February, June, and October. We know this will take some getting used to, but I can already attest to the enormous difference it has made in our little offices. Little shifts can make big waves.

The changes in each schedule are usually small, but they are hard won, and well-researched, and pull in the best teachers we can find in Seattle that match our mission to foster a supportive, inclusive, and non-competitive atmosphere in which yoga practitioners can learn and grow. We’ve got some great new classes and teachers for you…
